Feeling overwhelmed right now? There is a quiet place for you to take a moment.

Online clinical psychology for burnout, anxiety and relational trauma

You're good at your life. You're capable, reliable, and the person everyone leans on. And you're exhausted in a way that rest hasn't touched.

Spoken Word Psychology is an online clinical psychology practice for adults across Australia. Many clients are capable, responsible people, often the one everyone relies on, who have spent years looking fine on the outside while carrying a great deal on the inside.

Does this sound familiar?

If you recognised yourself in even one of these, you’re in the right place.

You say "I'm fine" so automatically that you've
stopped noticing it isn't true.

01

You're hard on yourself in ways you'd never be with anyone else.

02

You're always "on", and stopping to rest brings guilt rather than relief.

03

You've never told anyone some of what you carry, because you're afraid of what they'd think of you.

04

You understand your patterns perfectly well, but understanding hasn't changed them

05

Your childhood "wasn't that bad", yet something from it still shapes how you see yourself and other people.

06

You've spent years masking and overcompensating, and you're exhausted from keeping it up.

07

Early morning fog over the water, with trees along the shore as the sun rises

You came in about one thing. There may be more to the story.

Most people start therapy because of something happening now: constant anxiety, burnout, a relationship that keeps going the same way, or something recent that has stirred up the past.

Often there's a thread running back further. Maybe you were the eldest, the capable one, the child who helped out and never made a fuss. Maybe you learned early that your needs came last, or that it was safer to cope alone.

You don't need to have made that connection. Many people haven't yet, and that's a good place to begin.

Together, we get curious about how you came to be this way. We build a shared understanding of why you feel and act the way you do now (this is called a formulation). And we make room for gratitude toward the parts of you that got you through. They worked hard. They may simply not need to work this hard anymore.

“Shame derives its power from being unspeakable.”

Daring Greatly

There is very little a psychologist here hasn't heard, and nothing you can say will make them think less of you.

You don't need to have it figured out. You can cry, go quiet, or speak in half sentences. You decide what we talk about and when. We never rush into painful memories.

Shame tends to grow in secrecy. Many people arrive having held something for ten, twenty, thirty years because they were certain it was too much, too strange, or too shameful to say out loud. Saying it, at your own pace, to someone who doesn't flinch, is often where things begin to shift.

You don’t have to perform here

How we can help

01

Burnout, perfectionism and the inner critic.

When achieving has become the only way you feel okay, and slowing down feels unsafe.

02

Anxiety and always being on guard.

When your mind and body can't switch off, and reassurance never lasts.

03

Relational and childhood trauma.

Not only the big, obvious events. Also the quiet ones: being unseen, criticised, or left to cope alone.

What we work toward

Everyone's goals are different. Many people work toward:

Understanding why you react the way you do, with less self-blame

→

Saying no without having to justify it

→

Letting yourself stop without needing a reason

→

Saying hard things out loud without shame

→

Feeling more connected to yourself and to the people around you

→

How therapy works here

We take an integrative approach: therapy here starts with understanding you. From there, your psychologist draws on evidence-based approaches including:

Helps you understand the patterns you formed early in life, and why they still run the show. Then we work on changing them.

Schema Therapy

Helps your brain process painful memories that feel "stuck", so they stop hijacking the present.

EMDR

Depending on what you bring, your psychologist may also draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, and gentle body-based regulation skills. You are never expected to fit one method.

Alongside these

Therapy that fits into a full life

It's hard to find time to do something for yourself, especially when you spend most of your day looking after everyone else. Online therapy takes away some of the obstacles.

No travel.

No commute, parking or time in traffic. A 50-minute session takes about 50 minutes of your day.

Easier to fit in.

Around work, children, or a lunch break, wherever you can find a quiet spot.

Somewhere you feel comfortable.

Many people find it easier to be honest from their own space.

Wherever you are

Anywhere in Australia. Distance doesn't decide who you can see.

Online therapy isn't right for everyone. If it isn't right for you, we'll tell you, and help you find what is.

Our story in brief

Spoken Word Psychology began in 2019, in a therapy room in South Melbourne. When COVID moved sessions online, something unexpected happened: people who might never have walked into a clinic, because of travel time, fear, or anxiety, began reaching out. We never went back.

Today we're a growing telehealth practice, based in Melbourne's west and open to adults across Australia.
